PANE CARASAU (“toasted bread”) is a traditional Sardinian flatbread. It was first created a long time ago when Sardinian shepherds needed a bread that could last a long time without going stale. Traditionally, only women would prepare this bread, kneading and spreading the dough into very thin discs that would then be toasted in a wood oven. The resulting bread is extremely fragrant and tasty, fantastic for aperitifs paired with delicious sauces, cheeses, cold cuts, meats, or fish, or simply to give a nice crunchiness to a salad. The food pairings are practically endless, so let your imagination run wild! It is also great finger food or as a snack.
